JOB ROTATION PROGRAM

It was Spring, 2016 when The Leaders sat behind closed doors designing and socializing how to change the future of product management. In what ways could one harness fresh perspectives to drive innovation and challenge the status quo? In the Fall of 2016, they got their answer.

EMPLOYEE JOB ROTATION PROGRAM

THE PROGRAM

The MBA Job Rotation Program (JRP) was created to provide early-in-career Product Managers (dubbed The League of Extraordinary Product Managers) the exposure and breadth to build their technical chops from the day they step foot on campus. The intent is to build product generalists who want to explore, grow, and hone their PM superpowers across Networking, Security, Cloud, and Business Strategy & Operations before deciding where they will specialize.

The Breakdown

In the Fall of 2016, our inaugural group within The League of Extraordinary Product Managers (The League) was matched into new roles. Today, there are three active classes participating in the MBA-JRP: 2014/15, 2016 and 2017. Below you’ll see the breakdown by school and class:

The Drivers

THE MBA JRP IS DRIVEN BY THREE CORE TENETS:

Ownership

Everyone in the program owns the program. In addition to playing an active role in recruiting, members of the JRP are asked to have a unique contribution to the program. Pivotal decisions about the JRP are often put forward to these superheroes for discussion and consideration.

Free Market

The process of matching members of The League into roles is run via a free market process. Roles are posted, bios are posted, and lots of conversations ensue. Then, members of The League and managers submit their preferences. We love the matches made in heaven – where the #1 preference of the superhero is the #1 preference of the manager.

Free Will

Navigation within the JRP is driven by free will. There are a great many ways to spend 3 years in the program which will achieve this core intent. We do not predetermine the type of roles you do. Our job is to ensure you have the guidance, support, and as much role variety as possible within the free market matching process to make a decision that excites and motivates you.

Last but not least

Performance and Career

Twice yearly, members of the MBA-JRP will sit down for a performance review with management and the head of the MBA-JRP. Members will be evaluated against criteria introduced at the start of your Cisco career. Once a year or more, we will have a conversation about promotion and people management readiness to ensure everyone is aligned with your short and long-term goals. Also expect to get regular feedback as part of your day-to-day activities and specific deliverables.

Immigration

The MBA-JRP accepts candidates who need sponsorship. The MBA-JRP team will work closely with you and Fragomen, Cisco’s immigration law firm, to ensure we are driving hard to a Plan A (your desired next step) and that we all know what Plan B is, if needed. As it stands, we have three superheroes from three countries who didn’t win the H1B lottery and are spending a year in London, after which we plan to have them return to the U.S. Just an example of what’s possible with Cisco’s global presence!

The Roles

There are two roles in the MBA-JRP: Product Manager (PM) and Business Strategy Manager (BSM). 90% of roles offered are PM roles.

In the BSM roles, expect to spend your time doing strategy projects related to any part of the Networking and Security business. These projects are not dissimilar to consulting work, but unlike consulting you get to stick around and be part of the implementation and impact.

PM roles can vary in scope and complexity falling anywhere along the lines of traditional product lifecycle work or setting product strategy, to preparing a product for launch, owning a product/line profit and loss (P&L), or executing go-to-market activities. This past year, our superheroes played a big part in Cisco’s Intuitive network launch and move to recurring revenue model. They also worked on the net big things to come…which you know we can’t talk about here (wink).
